Public art fabrication is the technical process of turning an artist's design into a finished, installation-ready public artwork: scanning the original, scaling it to final size, and producing durable patterns or castings a foundry or fabricator can build from. At Kemperle Industries, sculpture fabrication spans every stage of that process, from a sculptor's maquette (a small preliminary scale model) built up into a full-scale work, to exact reproductions of a signed edition, to archival documentation of a major piece for an institution's permanent record. Our role is technical, but it's also collaborative. Getting a piece right means working closely with the artist at every stage, since the goal is always to protect their vision, not replace it. We combine high-accuracy 3D scanning, digital scaling, CNC routing, 3D printing, and mold making to move a piece from original form to finished installation without losing the artist's hand in the details. We've worked this way with the Guggenheim Museum, Michael Heizer, Studio EIS, and various independent artists and studios, across different scales and different materials, with the same technical discipline throughout. No two commissions are the same, so every workflow is scoped around the piece in front of us: its material, its scale, and where it's ultimately headed.

I.
3D Scanning
Clay, wax, plaster, and mixed-media originals captured at full resolution using structured-light and laser 3D scanning. Fine surface texture, tool marks, and the artist's hand are preserved in the resulting point cloud and mesh data, giving fabricators an exact digital reference before any physical work begins.
II.
CAD & Digital Scaling
Geometry scaled to any final installation size with full proportional integrity. Digital sculpting and CAD modeling correct for material shrinkage, structural support, and mounting hardware before the artist reviews and approves the model for production.
III.
CNC Routing
Timber, plastic, and soft-metal patterns routed to spec, whether they are headed to a foundry for casting or used directly as production tooling. Every pattern arrives ready for the next step, with no on-site rework required.
IV.
3D Printing
FDM, SLA, and SLS 3D printed sculpture output at any scale, from small review models artists can hold and approve to full-size structural cores and finished limited-edition pieces, chosen by material and finish requirements for each individual project.
V.
Edition Reproduction
Dimensional fidelity across every cast in a limited edition, verified against the approved original using mold making and casting workflows suited to the piece (plaster, resin, or fiberglass), so each numbered edition matches the artist's intent exactly, cast after cast.
VI.
Archival Records
High-resolution 3D archive for provenance, insurance, and institutional collections, capturing a permanent digital record of a work's exact geometry and surface condition at a given point in time, useful for museums, foundations, and private collectors alike.

Brief & Scope
We work with you to confirm scale, timeline, material, and fabrication constraints before any scanning begins, flagging foundry or installation requirements early so scope and budget are set with no surprises later in the project.

Scan Reference
A high-fidelity structured light or laser scan of the original. The artist reviews the resulting digital model for surface accuracy and completeness before scaling or any digital modification begins.

Scale & Model
Final dimensions applied using CAD modeling and CNC workflows suited to the piece, with a full proportional review sent to the artist for approval before any physical output is produced.

Prototype
A reduced-scale 3D print gives the artist a physical object to review before committing to full production, catching proportion or detail issues while changes are still inexpensive and easy to make.
05
Produce & Archive
Final outputs delivered as a cast, print, or CNC-routed piece to spec, along with a permanent high-resolution 3D archive of the work for provenance, insurance, or future reproduction needs.
